On June 21, 2000, another step was taken to remedy a part of the prejudice and discrimination that existed in the wartime 1940s:

Twenty-two Asian Americans were honored by receiving the United States of America’s highest award for valor in combat - The Medal of Honor. Of the twenty-two, 20 were from either the 442nd Regimental Combat Team (14) or the 100th Infantry Battalion (6). Fifteen of the medals were awarded posthumously, and seven to living veterans, five from the 442nd RCT and one from the 100th.

In making the presentation, President Bill Clinton said, ". . . it is long past time to break the silence about their courage . . . Rarely has a nation been so well served by a people it has so ill treated."
