The National Japanese American Memorial is located just north of the Capitol on a triangular plot bounded by Louisiana Avenue, New Jersey Avenue and D Street, NW. From the southern tip of the site, you can look southeast on New Jersey Avenue and see the Capitol Building. Lying southwest is the Mall and its museums.

The Memorial was dedicated in 2000 and ownership of the Memorial was transferred to the United States Government in 2002. The National Park Service has the responsibility to maintain the Memorial. The project for the Memorial was initiated in 1988 by the "Go For Broke" National Veterans Association Foundation. The name of this organization was later changed to the National Japanese American Memorial Foundation (NJAMF).
